[Game Preview] Week 2 - Los Angeles Rams (1-0) at Philadelphia Eagles(0-1)

Los Angeles Rams (1-0) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-1)
The 2020 Philadelphia Eagles season didn’t have the start they were looking for week 1 as they opened the season without their starting LT, RT, RG, RB, DT and WR and struggled against the Washington Football team to open their season with a loss. Luckily they will get two of those starters back this week in running back Miles Sanders and RT Lane Johnson. Both will be welcome additions as the Eagles struggled to block anyone against the Football Team both on the line and from the running back position. Additionally, getting a running game going will greatly help slow the pass rush which will be impressive as the Rams posted one of the best pressure rates last week led by All-Pro Aaron Donald. Hopefully Doug Pederson learns from his mistakes of last week and gets Carson moving with some designed rollouts and mixes up his play-calling more to establish the run. If Doug tries to do the same thing as last week it will be a long day for Carson and Donald will feast. On the other side of the ball, Schwartz had Slay follow McLaurin last week and it worked as Slay shut McLaurin down, but that is more difficult this week as the Rams have two talented receivers in Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. The Eagles will need to see how Maddox holds up on the outside with a bigger challenge this week. With the struggles of the Eagles offense and their injuries on that side of the ball, the Eagles will need their defenses to limit the quick scoring Rams offense or it will be a long day. Should be a good test for the Eagles to rebound after falling flat out of the gate last week. Go Birds!

Eagles 30 - Rams 23
Nick Foles filled in for the injured Carson Wentz, taking up his spot under center after three months without game action. Foles promptly recaptured the magic, passing for 270 yards and confidently leading the Eagles to a 30-23 win over the Rams on Sunday night with plenty of help from his defense and his playmakers. Foles got plenty of help from his running game as Wendell Smallwood rushed for two touchdowns and rookie Josh Adams ran for another score as the Eagles (7-7) kept their playoff hopes quite viable with a gritty victory over the Rams (11-3), who lost consecutive regular-season games for the first time in coach Sean McVay's tenure.

Recap from Last Week’s Games.
Eagles - In a near-reversal of the previous season's opener, the Eagles scored the first 17 points, only for the Washington Football Team to then shut their offense out for the remainder of the afternoon. Meanwhile, Washington's offense scored 27 unanswered points, and the defense sacked Carson Wentz eight times, recorded two interceptions, and forced three fumbles. With the loss, Philadelphia's six-game winning streak against Washington was snapped dating back to Week 14 of the 2016 season, and the Eagles lost the first game of the season since 2015.
Rams - Playing their first game ever in their brand-new home at SoFi Stadium, the Rams held off the Cowboys in a close battle of NFC contenders. Receiving the opening kickoff (from former Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein), Los Angeles drove 75 yards in seven plays, with Malcolm Brown scoring the new stadium's first touchdown on a 1-yard run. Rookie kicker Samuel Sloman missed on his first field goal attempt, a 29-yard try that bounced off the left upright near the end of the first quarter, but later was successful on field goals of 35 and 31 yards in the second quarter. However, Dallas took a 14-13 halftime lead as Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott scored on both a touchdown run and a touchdown reception. The Rams reclaimed the lead as Malcolm Brown (who finished with a team-high 18 rushes for 79 yards) scored his second touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run midway through the third quarter to put Los Angeles ahead 20-14. Zuerlein converted a 33-yard field goal late in the third quarter, but it would be as close as the Cowboys would get. Rookie safety Jordan Fuller led the Rams with eight total tackles, including a key tackle of Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb on a fourth-and-3 play at the Rams' 9-yard line, just one yard short of a first down to kill a Dallas scoring drive.

Philadelphia has produced a 22-19-1 (.536) record in the all-time series vs. Los Angeles. The Eagles own a 6-game winning streak against the Rams, scoring 30+ points in 5 straight contests.
Philadelphia is 15-8 (.652) in home games vs. Los Angeles, with victories in each of the last 2 such meetings (last: W, 34-28 on 10/5/14 at Lincoln Financial Field).
The Eagles are 23-9 (.719) at home in the regular season under head coach Doug Pederson, which marks the 5th-best home winning percentage in the NFL since 2016, trailing only New En-gland (.818, 27-6), Baltimore (.758, 25-8), Kansas City (.758, 25-8) and New Orleans (.727, 24-9).
Philadelphia has captured all 4 of its home openers with Doug Pederson at the helm (since 2016). Pederson is one of only two head coaches in Eagles history to win each of their first 4 home openers with the team, joining Joe Kuharich (1964-67).
In Week 1 at Washington, Philadelphia allowed only 239 total yards (80 rushing, 5th; 159 passing, 3rd), which were the fewest by any defense in the NFL during kickoff weekend. The Eagles limited Washington to just 27.8% (5-of-18) on third downs, which was also the 5th-best mark in the league.

Stats to Know
Pressure Rate
It doesn’t take advanced stats to know that Wentz spent most of Sunday under significant pressure. Washington sacked him eight times behind a makeshift offensive line that struggled to contain the Football Team’s pass rush. The Eagles allowed a 34% pressure rate Sunday, according to ESPN Next Gen Stats. That was the third-worst in the NFL. Five different Washington players generated at least four pressures. And it doesn’t get any easier against the Rams. The Cowboys allowed a 40.5% pressure rate Sunday night in their loss to the Rams, which was the second-worst mark of Week 1. And a big reason for that was Rams star Aaron Donald. Donald — the six-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro and two-time AP Defensive Player of the Year who has 44 sacks over the past three seasons — posted a 28.6% pressure rate on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott himself. He pressured Prescott 10 times for 35 pass rushes and finished with four tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss and four quarterback hits. According to Next Gen Stats, Donald’s pressure rate over the past three seasons is 13.5%, 13.9% and 14.6%. The Eagles offensive line is going to have to be ready or it is going to be another long Sunday for Carson Wentz.
Matchups to Watch
Carson Wentz vs. Himself
I note this matchup not to downplay the Rams and what they bring to the table, but to note that Wentz had plenty of mistakes that ultimately cost us the week 1 matchup. Change nothing of the game last week, bad OL, questionable scheming especially in the second half, Carson Wentz playing better wins us the game. Things were bad around him and he actively made them worse at times. These two things can be true: Wentz cost us the week 1 game and he should bounce back because he is a really good QB. This isn't the sky is falling, #TankForTrevor blurb, it's simply acknowledging the biggest change from week 1 to week 2 that would aid in a victory - Carson Wentz returning to form. There was also a lot of good last week, namely the first half! Check out the first TD throw to Ertz. Short, compressed field where he needs to make a snap decision and he comes off his first read (JJAW) and hits Ertz for 6. This is a great play by Wentz where he showed how good he is capping off a great drive. We need more of this consistency. Wentz was even missing on staples of the offense. He was erratic in the pocket and regularly off target. I love hero ball, I hate when QBs play scared, but better urgency and avoiding negative plays in the pocket would go a long way in smoothing out the rough edges of his game. It's infuriating to have some of the same issues he had in year 3 continue in year 5. Regardless, Wentz is a really good QB, so he should be expected to bounce back from a bad game every QB has once in a while. It just needs to happen quickly so the Eagles don't fall behind in the young season. This Rams secondary has a phenomenal CB in Jalen Ramsey and a really good young safety in John Johnson III; they aren't slouches. Wentz needs to be better and it would be surprising if he isn't.
Eagles (downright) Offensive Line vs. Aaron Donald and the Rams Pass Rush
Washington may have a better, deeper defensive line but they don't have Aaron Donald. He is so good he lifts a pass rush up to the top tiers of the league on his own given his dominance and versatility. Donald isn't just a Defensive Tackle; he'll line up inside and outside while wrecking every part of the OL he can along the way. Just look at what Baldy has in his review for him this week. This is a problematic matchup for Philly given their patchwork offensive line. Even though there were positive things some of the new guys did, they made a lot of mistakes, and will continue to do so in their young careers. The last time the Eagles played the Rams in 2018, Philly held Donald to 2 total pressures in probably his most ineffective game during the course of his DPOY season. The difference between that Eagles OL and this one is the health. Philly won't have a healthy Brandon Brooks; while they'll have Lane Johnson again it'll be in his first start of the season, he's coming off a late summer ankle procedure. So his effectiveness is still TBD. JP, who also played in that game, has also declined a considerable amount since then. One player returning to the field Sunday that should also give the Eagles a boost in pass protection is Miles Sanders. Not only is Sanders the best runner on the team, he's also the best pass blocking running back on the team. This alone won't stop Donald, but it should help. This defensive front from the Rams can get pushed around in the run game (more on that later) but can absolutely get after it in the pass rush department. Dallas doesn't have the line it used to either and Dak was under pressure at a roughly 42% rate, among the worst in week 1. The return of Lane Johnson should increase the effectiveness of this OL a considerable amount but given the new parts there will still be an adjustment period. This unit needs to come together quickly and the coaching staff needs to actually focus their game plan on helping their OL much more so than they did in week 1. Otherwise, expect Donald and his homies to bring the pain up front.
Eagles Pass Rush vs Rams OL
Even with some of the sustained injuries on this roster, the Eagles still have a formidable pass rush and flashed it quite a bit in week 1. The box score stats are highly deceiving in this area as Washington shifted their game plan quite a bit as the game went along. Philly pressured Haskins at a 30% clip last week. That number isn't great considering the state of Washington's offensive line. However, Haskins had the quickest time to throw in the NFL in week 1 with an average time to throw of 2.13 seconds. It's extremely difficult to pressure QBs when they get the ball out that quickly. Last week, Jared Goff was 8th in the NFL in this category, which will present some challenges for the Eagles. Dallas pressured Goff at a 20% clip last week, which is a horrendous number. Goff is a good QB and will slice you up if you don't get to him. But when you do, oftentimes he's effectively standing in quick sand as he was a bottom 8 QB under pressure (by Rating) in 2019. It's imperative this defensive front plays well this week. We already saw Malik Jackson return to form, now we need Fletcher Cox. Philly should get Brandon Graham (concussion) and Derek Barnett (hammy) back this week which should increase the effectiveness of the pass rush. Josh Sweat has also shown tremendous growth in year 3 having the best game of his career this past Sunday with TY McGill flashing in limited snaps. This offensive line from the Rams underwent a mini make-over this offseason but still has some question marks up front. This will be a real test for them as the Eagles pass rush is much more formidable than the one Dallas offers. Furthermore, this is a defensive staff that has consistently gotten to Goff of late. Given the changes on both squads, this is a good measuring stick game in the trenches.
Eagles Coverage vs Rams Receivers
Jim Schwartz had Sean McVay's number in their most recent matchup in 2018 so I am curious to see who gets the upper hand this time around. The Rams have a really good WR room with Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, and Josh Reynolds. They also have a good tight end in Tyler Higbee. Philly has their work cut out for them this week as the Rams are much deeper than Washington. The Rams passing attack was predicated on the short, quick game with a lot of motions and play action last week. Carson Wentz led the NFL in Average Intended Air Yards while Jared Goff was last. Goff's Average Intended Air Yards were 4.3 per attempt with roughly half his passing attempts coming within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Getting the ball to Goff's first read and out of his hands quickly is key as he can be an adventure when he is forced to hold onto the ball. McVay is really good at disguising what the Rams will do running multiple plays out of similar looks. Lastly, their receivers are great at getting quick separation and great getting yards after the catch. The defensive game plan for Philly in the secondary should look quite different this week than it did last week. There isn't one receiver the Eagles can key on for Slay to take away. I'd bet Schwartz moves him around quite a bit but with Woods as the primary recipient of special attention. Slay looked every bit as good as you'd expect last week and that's a huge addition to this secondary. One area of concern I have for Philly is the middle of the defense. This Eagles LB group is among the worst in the NFL in coverage; McVay is going to look to attack that relentlessly all game long. He did the same thing to Dallas last week. It was encouraging to see Rodney McLeod bounce back after a poor 2019 as he was every bit as spry as he once was. The rest of the middle of this defense leaves a lot to be desired. Either way, this is a deeper Rams receiving room, with a creative play-caller, and a better passer than the Eagles just faced. There was a lot of good to take from the defensive performance last week but they face a significant test Sunday in the Rams.

DWT27 (November 28th 2020)

DWT27 (November 28th 2020)
Testing testing; check one two – DWT is live once again on Reddit!
Terrific, terrific stuff

Alas – promotion has remained minimal; but after last weeks hooplah - there's finally a sense, that a real actual reason to go balls out on promotion, may no be too fucking far away at all now. Terrific terrific stuff 😎. Still plenty of heads will have been shaken in knowing acknowledgement (fucked it again - useless old cunt); but I learned a wee whiley ago, to no concern myself too much with the reaction to an individual failure. Often the finer details are skimmed over, in exchange for a damning indictment. Its more fun for the casual user - either read these over-long historic entries here in the DWT Reddit Era Archives, or just deem it a laughable piece of shite. With the latter representing the sentiment of many, many comments I've received - I'm under no illusions...three options in the interim. Place sensible careful bets, to heighten the chance of victory at much reduced odds - Answer: Fuck off. Make it so the banter surrounding the wagers, outclasses the quality of the wager to such a degree, it becomes the actual reason the overwhelming majority of cunts frequent this fine establishment - Answer: Already evident. Make it so the wagers are well poised, on paper nicely crafted, yet also intriguing and alluring in abundance - Answer: Already evident. Fuck you for asking.
So when you think of it that way - its not really a case of, 'Come on now - the changes required are obvious as fuck, you stupid, delicious smelling, old prick'. For me, the snakey path DWT has been on, will be a blur to many - but for sure there's a smorgasbord of heroes who have that specific DWT memory they can turn to and gloss over. The very fibre of what this is all about - I've said it often enough. That's become the substance of each reaction...being aware of the cold hard facts - knowing when to inject a sense of encouraging razmatazz. It's no exactly clear when razzmatazz isnae evident tbf haha - but to clarify; we're talking purely from the perspective of onlookers. So moved they are by the words or the wager or both, they feel moved to introvertedly engage (with a wee like or upvote or passing of a point-boosting icon or some such), or even by golly extrovertedly engaged (a comment or a PM or a request for a lock of hair).
Now there's steam behind the withered sails again, you'll find me doing this a lot ^ - spouting away about the ethos of DWT; the fibre etc. I've forever and a half had the desire to scribe a wee book of some type there; but through a combo of lack of direction, inspiration and dedication - a fucking million miles away it remains haha - ah no. One thing that is forming itself into a wee page-turner is DWT itself. I've mused about this over the months we've done this and it makes me laugh sometimes - 'Look at you, you ridiculous, pompous, semi-illiterate disaster - who the fuck would read that? Away and clean your sheets you disgusting bastard'. But here - its free to publish a wee ebook or whatever. I'm no too fussed about the recognition - well aware I am, that perhaps Richard and Judy would forego inclusion in their bookclub - but just to have that piece of creation in existence...off the page. I get that it does already exist here on the hallowed pages of Reddit; but as a traditional older hero - my eyes are always turned at the potential for reading my own words in a purpose made, for retail piece of literature. A wee flag planted in the planet for a lucky few to stumble across and spend time with.
I'm no going to lie - the journey the mind has been on for the last 11 months, has properly opened my eyes to the potential curvyballs life can toss at you. We're already a blueprint for a set of textbooks that'll be taught to young uns of the future. 'And they wore a mask like this, and had to stay this far away - how far again? Gary? No Gary (for the love of fuck) - its 2m'. Comparative with the terrors of the great wars in terms of impact, it obviously no quite as drop to knees-type horrificness - but impactful nonetheless. In a global sense, the world has done not too shabby at avoiding chaos in a global sense (World War III) - but that's the worry...WW3 would surely be swift and completely devastating based on what types of ridiculous stuff cunts own and keep up their sleeve. 'It'll wipe out the whole world.' Smug stupid cunt with a big smile on his face - what's the point of it if it takes you and all you're friends as well you silly bastard? You cannae deal with that type of reasoning - and when you have that type of interaction commonplace, its a difficult thought to handle, acknowledging the enormity of the journey to resolution. Not least of which knowing there'll likely have to be serious discussion afforded, on the subject of you yourself having to sacrifice ideals.
Whenever you hear that from someones lips - an uttering that drips of selfishness - immediately there's a shit ton of work and time you can attribute to the journey you're about to go on. So much in fact, it becomes a real turn-off even contemplating having to frequent locations with said arguer, in an endeavour to erradicate his desire to enforce nonsense. Lets go hassle some reasonable folks with this laughable shite. The risk then exists the prick will run with the thought after the dust settles, thus creating an actual reason to stop him in his tracks (i.e. if this one thing happens - he gets the keys to a something or other). You could seen it starting to manifest itself, but left it until necessity of the more urgent was required. The world has nurtured the invisible line this kind of mantra bobs alone at - gently pushing it further and further towards that soft cosy place, where laughter fills the air and soft warmth is apparent. Sounds terrific to many - but its not the essence of what gets the goosebumps prickling for others. There's of course no harm in that; but that fact existing - theres no harm in it - that's a fair journey from me thinking that to the global population gasping in reaction to being told of this in the distant future. 'This handsome man thought what???? Hoo mama'. No doubt in my mind that'll be a popular catchphrase in the distant future.

For those keeping track - you'll be well aware by now, my fondness for the events of last Satday...elusive the jackpot remains - but the ingredients we were slipping into the mixing bowl was quite frankly, off the fucking page. One wee fucking goal from Well and we would have been skipping down the streets singing the DWT song in celebration. Not to be - but that disappointment was tethered with a beautiful double - one that lasted until the very end btw and is officially a winner. Didnae quite tip us back over the 200 mark, but got us sniffing it by golly - hoo mama. A tenner and pocket change away from that marker. Glancing from a higher elavation, so as to get a fuller potential picture - we see a kitty that holds two hundred and twenty seven bangers (and a smidge) in it. Thats red clearing capital right there. No getting carried away - but I've a really good feeling about this one 😎 So to wrap up - we've worked until late, in order to fill the plate - so now we wait, leaving hope in the hands of fate. Reddit Running Total (RRT) currently sits at -£210.85. Ah no.

I’m not promoting it in the slightest to be put on; it's purely to be completely transparent about where the beans I'm spilling are being pushed towards – this is after all, a Life Experiment: Can a useless old arsehole prosper under strict weekly gambling conditions? Word of warning; prior to this – not really.
The sticky clarifies - but just to reiterate - here's the format...DRS20 is Dads Recommended Spend: £20. This is a lot of money granted - and I would encourage absolute apprehension if this sort of money represents life altering for you personally if zero is returned. I’m lucky enough to be able to afford to lose £20 in a week; but confess that if I got no return for say, 20 weeks in a row - I would likely be without something I value (a streaming service or summat). I don’t take it lightly. Four bets are placed with this outlay; a £5 Treble (DWT) and three £5 Doubles. Generally if two come up, the bet is covered (up or down £2 or so). My gambling prowess is pretty much a joke; so whilst I advertise, I in no way qualify them as a given. I’m a prick with plenty bollocks to spout is all. This is how I frame it.

So here it is - the one that acknowledges the presence of xmas around the corner and translates that fuel into a strong desire to prosper for one and all:

DWT REPRESENTATIVE Opponent Odds
ST JOHNSTONE motherwell 11/5
BIRMINGHAM CITY millwall 15/8
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY stoke city 17/10

23.84/1 we get for this selection – terrific.

Over 29's last week; over 23's this week - a wee dip again, but no much again. the final swing pre-December. Whilst Black Friday was yesterday; there is pish aplenty to purchase yet still on the usual websites - one hundred and a smidge bangers would be the very dab when it comes to grabbing a coffee grinder or whatever shite. If I were yous though; I'd maybe resist the temptation of buying finite sources of mirth and instead slip the gain into a wee savings account. The road to success is paved by sensible dullards 😎

ST JOHNSTONE are the selection perhaps controversially included after the same game was on last week in which we backed travellers motherwell and now we back them and they're the ones on the road this week; thats the live gut-feeling action you get here on DWT. The last minute shitstorm caused by the withdrawal of Campbell and Maguire for motherwell there pre-last weeks game had me fearing the worst...the quick start cancelled quickly; the buggers were pummelled by the hungry Stevie May-lead Sainties. A draw a terrific result given the statistics. Missing again the pair of them for this encounter; there's a sense of unfinished business for Sainties. A solid cunt of a price for a ship with wind in her sails.
BIRMINGHAM CITY have been up and down over the last couple months; waves of form - pairs of defeats tarnishing an otherwise solid program thus far. A manager at the helm with a terrific(ish) pedigree; this will be just the sort of game to kick start things after a couple of steadying draws. Its common knowledge millwall are pish outside London (probably - most of them are tbf). Terrific price again - there's a proper gift-esque scent in the air.
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY still to return a first win under Anthony Pulis, return to Hillsborough in hope of properly getting some energy flowing and making up for the lost ground handicapping them. The arriver of Pulis is a strong indicator of their intent. No joke are stoke sure; but the ingredients have candles colour coded to the Owls this week. Thats that. In the fucking satchel 😎

So there we have it – nostalgia, hope and determination all apparent in equal measure. This time we do it right; wind in the sails – and off across the ocean in search of new worlds. A powerful pirate ship hunting high and low for treasures. Raise the fucking flag - the good ship DWT is back and ready to provide for its crew. If you play; play safe. DRS20 as always people.
Frustration at the amount won, is better than the heartache at the amount lost.

BANG BANG (No, not that kind): A Toast to the 2019 New York Yankees.

Following a 2018 season in which the Yankees won 100 games, expectations for the 2019 season were sky high. We didn't quite achieve our ultimate goal of a World Series championship, but it sure was a fun season, and boy did we take a strange trip to get there...
The team won 103 games, tied for the 7th most in their 117 year history, and most since the historic 1998 team that won 114. They broke their franchise record for home runs that lasted less than 1 year, and finished 1 shy of the MLB record, which the Twins captured in a thrilling, see-saw battle for dong supremacy. They won the division by 7 games over the Rays, and in a development that surprised absolutely no one, swept the 102-win Twins to reach the ALCS. Our exciting season ended with a disappointing loss to the 2019 AL Champion* Houston Astros, but it sure was a fun ride.

Best Games of the Year:

April 16th: James Paxton arrives on the scene and Mike Tauchman hits his first career homer as the Yankees blank the Red Sox 8-0
May 7th: Gio Urshela and DJ LeMahieu lead the Yankees to a late comeback win against the Mariners
May 17th: The Yankees complete a 3 run, 9th inning rally against the rays to win 4-3
June 17th: Masahiro Tanaka shuts out the Rays in the Yankees pitching performance of the year
June 29th/30th: The Yankees outslug the Red Sox 17-13 in a wild London game, the first MLB game ever played in Europe. They would come back from a 4-0 deficit to complete the sweep the next day. One might even say the Yankees play that weekend was “absolute box office”
July 23rd: In the undisputed game of the year for the Yankees, and probably the entire 2019 MLB regular season, the Yankees beat the Twins 14-12
September 1st: The Yankees complete a 4-0 comeback win with back-to-back (and a belly to belly) Gardy and Ford homers to beat the A’s 5-4

Best Plays of the Year:

April 16th: Gio Urshela throws out Mookie Betts while falling down.
July 23rd: Aaron Hicks takes a walk-off double away from Max Kepler in the aforementioned Game of the Year
August 7th: Mike Tauchman robs Pedro Severino of a home run in Baltimore
October 8th: Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu team up to retire Eddie Rosario and kill a rally in Game 3 of the ALDS
October 12th: Aaron Judge and DJ LeMahieu double off Alex Bregman in Game 1 of the ALCS

Key Additions

DJ LeMahieu:
Signed as a super-utility/5th infielder to a 2-year deal, The Machine didn’t even have a spot on the Opening Day starting lineup. Not only did he find his way into the line-up, he became out team MVP. DJ hit .327/.375/.518 with 26 Homers, 102 RBI (out of the leadoff spot, no less), and 6.0 WAR, finishing 4th in the AL MVP voting. He also cries hit what was one of the biggest home run in Yankees history (for about 20 minutes)
James Paxton:
Traded from the Seattle Mariners for Justus Sheffield, Erik Swanson, and Dom-Thompson Williams, the Big Maple quickly entrenched himself in the heart of Yankees fans when he threw 8 scoreless innings with 12 Ks against the Red Sox in his 4th start with the team. He had a bit of an inconsistent, yet solid, season overall, going 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA, 116 ERA+, and 11.1 K/P. He also shut down the Astros and Justin Verlander in a gusty win-or-go home ALCS game 5.
Adam Ottavino:
Otto made Yankees history upon signing, becoming the first player in Yankees history to wear “0” on the back of his jersey. While he struggled a bit with control (5.4 BB/9) He had a fantastic season out of the pen, posting a 1.90 ERA, 2.2 WAR, and 88 K in 66.1 IP.
Edwin Encarnacion:
Acquired near the trade deadline for Juan Then, Edwin and his parrot put up a nice couple months of production for us, mashing 13 homers while hitting .249/.325/.531 in 177 ABs.
Now these were the guys we added this season that were EXPECTED to produce for us. As for everyone else...

The Next Man Up

You can’t talk about the 2019 Yankees without bringing up the historic and unprecedented injuries the team faced. It began early, when it was announced Didi Gregorius needed Tommy John Surgery shortly after the 2018 ALDS. CC Sabathia as well would not be ready by opening day after recovering from heart surgery. These alone seemed manageable. Once Spring Training began, however, players started to drop like flies. Before the season even began, we lost Aaron Hicks, Dellin Betances, and Luis Severino to injuries. After opening day the injuries continued, Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar were both quickly added to the IL as well. Tulowitzki and Greg Bird were less surprising but both suffered season ending injuries before playing more than ten games. Gary Sanchez suffered a groin strain soon after as well. At this point, we were less than 20 games into the season and had already lost our #1 SP, our best RP, our starting CF, DH, 3B, and catcher, our starting SS and the guy we signed to replace him. This combined gave us a pretty mediocre start, we managed to fight our way back to 0.500 in a series against the Royals, but in the game we did, Aaron Judge suffered an Oblique Strain. Even our TV play by play guy missed significant time after vocal cord surgery.
At this point, the season seemed over to many, we entered a West Coast road trip expecting the worst. The first game played against the Angels in LA had a lineup that looked more like Brett Gardner doing a rehab assignment in AAA than an actual Yankees lineup. However, instead of keeling over and dying, or even merely treading water, the Yankees thrived, mainly due to contributions from many unlikely sources:
Gio Urshela:
Previously known as a glove-only player with a AAA bat, the Yankees acquired Urshela for cash considerations from Toronto at the end of 2018. Gio Urshela had a major breakout year, slashing .314/.355/.534 with 21 HR, 74 RBI, and 34 2B in 476 PA. The breakout came after Urshela made 2 small offseason adjustments to his swing by opening up his stance and shortening his swing path. He began crushing the ball during spring training, and had people around the team raving about him. At the end of August, Urshela was batting .331, neck and neck with teammate DJ LeMahieu for the AL batting title, before missing a couple weeks with an injury and slumping after his return. His spectacular defense was also a breath of fresh air after a year of Miguel Andujar.
Mike Tauchman:
The Yankees acquired Tauchman in the final days of Spring Training in a trade with the Rockies. Tauchman had been underwhelming in his small amount of time with the Rockies, but after a brief trip to the minors came up and dominated the league before joining the IL himself. Tauchman put up a 128 OPS+, as well as 3.6 rWAR and 16 DRS in only 87 games. The “Sock Man” was a very pleasant surprise this year, and looks to continue to improve on what he showed next year.
Cameron Maybin:
Starting the season in the Cleveland Indians system, the Yankees acquired him on April 25th following injuries to Aaron Judge and Clint Frazier for about the price of a Toyota Corolla. Maybin also produced in his short tenure with the Yankees, slashing .285/.364/.494 with 11 homers, 9 steals, and 1.5 WAR in a little less than half of a season’s worth of ABs. Unlike Urshela and Tauchman, Maybin is a free agent this offseason, so hopefully for this he can jettison the success he had this past year into a nice payday.
Mike Ford:
Ford was called up for the first time this season following an injury to Greg Bird (shockedpikachu.jpg) and while he rode the Scranton Shuttle for most of the year, he produced in his time in the Bronx, hitting .259/.350/.559 with 12 homers (including the aforementioned walkoff) in 143 AB, while also winning the award of “THICCest First Baseman in Major League Baseball” (sorry Ji-Man Choi)

Toast:

Did you ever think that a team with this many injuries would ever win 103 games? A lot of us certainly didn’t. Very much a reason the Yankees success this year was their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. If there was a team this year that you would expect to have this kind of success, it certainly wouldn’t be the team that lost this many key contributors to the IL. Didi, Severino, Hicks, Judge, Andujar, Stanton, the list goes on.
One thing that cannot be lost among Yankees fans is just how fun this season was. Rallies, walkoffs, clutch hitting, clutch defense, this team had it all. Two walkoff homers were hit this year, with countless other walkoff and extra inning hits. It really was a treat to watch this team never say die, especially in the late innings when out lockdown bullpen got to do its job. Zack Britton, Adam Ottavino, Aroldis Chapman, and the rest of the gang really made it seem like the game was over after 6 innings countless times this year. Dellin Betances was sorely missed out of that bullpen, and we wish him well over in Queens next season. I personally wish we added to the bullpen this year, since you can never have too many arms, but I feel pretty good about where we currently stand.
Down on the farm, we’ve also got some talent that we expect to contribute soon, if not this year. Scranton and Trenton should have some pretty good talent this year getting ready to debut in the Bronx. Top 100 guys include Clarke Schmidt, Deivi Garcia, and Jasson Dominguez. Even some of the fringe guys like Luis Gil and Luis Medina have promising futures. Ready for this season, you bet we are. One can only imagine what 2020 has in store for this team. In conclusion, with the addition of Gerrit Cole, this team only got better this offseason. December off-season moves aside, this team is sure to be healthier and less injury-prone than last year. So let’s raise a glass and all look forward to an awesome 2020 season!

Bye Week Post 1 -- Who's to Blame and What's to be Done?

I don’t know if you heard but the Leafs are awful defensively. They are also lazy. A bunch of the forwards choose which games to play, and most of the defense core has no choice but to play. Every other play is a two on one against the leafs, and not a single player can defend against that. Everyone is caught pinching every time and Keefe needs to get the boys to hunker down and grind it out.
It is a rough time to be a Leaf. Just six games ago the Leafs were greatly improved defensively. They were never lazy, even if they missed a few missed assignments. Everyone played every game — Nylander was our most consistent player in terms of effort. The next man up strategy means our star prospects were about to get an NHL taste ahead of next season, when they WILL play on the roster. And hey, sometimes we give up a two on one, but that falls on a forward not covering for his defenseman, and hey, we saw him cover in the next shift so he’s figured it out. Most of the time we pinch, we maintain offensive zone possession and get fresh legs against a tired opposition. The Leafs never let up, and suddenly we win games by 2, 3, or even 4 goals!
So what changed between winning nine games and losing five of six? Is it the forwards being lazy? Is it the defensemen pinching at the wrong time? Is it every player being poor defensively? Is it Keefe’s new system?
No.
Its not.
The strengths and flaws of this team are the same in the last six games as they were in the previous nine. Our team has held steady in all non-counting stats. The team is generating positive ratios of shots, even after adjusting for score effects. The team is positive in expected goal differential. The team is generating a massively higher spike in cross ice passes — and NaturalStatTrick doesn’t even count that towards expected goals! Defensemen still pinch and forwards still cover for them most of the time. We still get long shifts on offense, routinely staying in the opposition zone for over a minute. So what’s different? And is it Freddie?
Yes, it is. And we need to stop blaming the team at this point.

Freddie had his best October since becoming a Leaf — still well below his career numbers, but an improvement for him. In November, under both Babcock and Keefe Freddie was near top of the league in SV% — 0.938 despite playing for the disheartened team under Babcock. He continued his numbers with Keefe, so we know he can succeed under Keefe. And then December hit.
He’s a .909 on the year despite leading the league through November. He’s just over .900 since December, and in the last six games (which includes his .969 against Calgary), he’s inching towards .850.
His SV% has taken minor hits on the PP and PK, but it has drastically dropped at even strength. Andersen is an above average goaltender who is currently sporting a .900 SV% at even strength for the season — which is where the Leafs spend most of their time.
His goals saved above average this season are essentially zero, meaning that the average of his league leading season and what we’ve seen since has cancelled out. This follows three seasons where he finished 8, 12, and 14 GSAA with the Leafs — something is wrong.
The important thing about the last point is that his numbers are dropping fast — if he keeps his December and January pace, this will be his worst NHL season ever.

There are a few reasons why this could be happening, which I will list in reverse order of likelihood:
  1. He’s injured. We haven’t heard any word of ANY injury, and the Leafs haven’t been shy to sideline injured players this season. Even when we don’t (cough*Rielly*cough, cough*Muzzin*cough) we’ve always heard about the injury ahead of time. They could be hiding an injury because he HAS to keep playing, but it isn’t a secret that Freddie is off his game. Releasing this information calms the fan panic every time he gives up three goals, and takes some pressure off management for assembling this roster.
  2. He can’t adjust to Keefe’s system. This could be true — his numbers late November could be an outlier and could be the team slowly converting to Keefe’s playstyle. We are giving up more dangerous chances due to puck possession and more players in deep on offense. Even though his GSAA is dropping, it is entirely possible that the type of shots we are giving up are shots that Freddie is prone to missing — doesn’t seem likely since the Leafs have been known as a poor defensive team for years now but we don’t have data to corroborate or disprove this.
  3. He’s slumping. He doesn’t usually slump midseason — we have a name for October Freddie after all — but all players are susceptible to slumps. In this case we need to give him games to get him back to speed, which is exactly what the Leafs have been doing by starting him again and again and again.
Whatever the reason, Freddie isn’t himself. If it's an injury, he just needs time to heal. If its a slump, he needs opportunity to fix it. If its a system issue — well then we have an issue.

The easy solution, the one every seems to be shouting at the sky like a certain Simpson we know, is to get a better backup goalie. A better backup goalie gives Freddie time to rest and recover. If he has an injury he is playing through out of necessity, this is our best bet.
BUT, Hutch hasn’t been bad in his last few games — and has looked better than Andersen. He could have just as easily started the last few games and given Andersen two weeks off instead of one! And the Leafs could have pulled Andersen from the All-Star game by reporting an injury — at worst Freddie would have gotten one extra night off to recover. This makes me skeptical we are dealing with an injury.
If Freddie is slumping, a backup goalie could, in theory, help his mental state since he knows he has competent backup behind him. In practice though, Freddie’s best stats have come on the Leafs and NOT with the Ducks (who split time between Gibson and Freddie). Again in practice, Freddie performs best on one day’s rest, worst with two days rest, and middling with 3+ days off. A better backup gives Freddie more extended breaks, which with our data set of three full seasons, says Freddie will do worse. Freddie has also started a number of games in a row now that he had no business starting — it seems the Leafs also want Freddie to play through his slump.
The last option is to explore the idea that Freddie can’t function in our system. It is possible, though less likely than a slump, and if this is the case, buying a goalie who has performed below average is not a reasonable solution to our problem — which suddenly becomes replacing a starting goaltender. We can’t simply acquire a below average goalie, any random backup, and expect he does better than a stumbling Freddie. And we can’t possibly write off the best goalie we’ve had in decades because he’s had a rough quarter season. If Freddie really can’t work in Keefe’s system (again, a slim chance), then the season is burned.

If you’ve made it this far, then you probably realize the Leafs can’t take active steps to fix the big team issue of the last six games and the last two months. A new backup won’t help Freddie, and we can’t fathom replacing a starter at this time. So what does that mean for us fans:
  1. We need to stop overreacting. We aren’t suddenly hot garbage because we stopped outscoring our goalie — who has performed as the NHL’s worst in the last six games. The same flaws we ignored when we were winning we are complaining about now; this is still a team that can win nine in a row, even if we’ve lost 5 of 6.
  2. We don’t NEED a goalie change. We SHOULD upgrade Hutch since he isn’t a great backup, but that backup doesn’t solve the Freddie issue.
  3. If we want Georgiev, we should target Georgiev, BUT, we need to stop pretending like he is a must have. He isn’t fixing any team issue, other than potentially replacing Freddie in two years if he can find another level to his game. He would be the closest thing we have to a replacement starter, since Woll likely won’t be ready, and neither will Scott, and there isn’t anyone else in the pipeline.
  4. There are other goalies we can target. Let’s talk about Casey DeSmith if we want a young backup we can keep for years.
  5. It sucks to lose, and it’s great to win, and I trust Keefe and Dubas to keep developing players, handling injuries, and produce a tonne of offense — and I won’t lose faith just because of Babcock’s bad start and Andersen’s likely slumping numbers.

Maidstone United - The only way is up

Maidstone United - The only way is up
Hi guys, I’ve seen many posts of this nature and thought I’d give it a shot myself (if anyone’s interested) I’ve been playing Football Manager for ages, back in the day when it was called Championship Manager, I was hooked from the off! I have owned near enough every version that has ever been released. I have gone through stages where I have not had a decent enough system so not played for a year or two although I always eventually get dragged back in.
I have always played the big clubs in various leagues and done pretty well, I bought a new system mid 2019 which coincided with the release of FM2019 so I got back into the game, once again playing careers amongst the European elite. I started getting into the tactical side of things more than I once did, the options available in FM2019 were pretty good and I found it easy to translate my ideas into actual formations and team setup and as a result I developed a tactic which is fantastic for top teams although with all the success the formation was bringing me, I started to bore of the game and found it was turning into a chore although I didn’t know how to turn this around so I gave the game a break for an extended period.
Fast forward to March 20th this year, I like many other were now on lockdown due to the coronavirus so I once again found myself loading up FM2019… Now, who to pick? Considered the usual subjects although was getting bored once again even considering them! I then started thinking about starting at the other end of the spectrum, someone non league, maybe a local team? Looked through the Vanarama tables and discovered Maidstone United! Didn’t give it much more thought and within a few minutes I was in charge… It was at this stage I realised that this was going to be hard, I had never seen players with abilities like I’d inherited, they were worse than the youngsters I was releasing en-masse at the big clubs.

The Stones
-----------------
The Stones
I stupidly assumed that I could select my all winning tactic and drag the team straight into first place although quick learnt that non league Larry's are not particularly accustomed to fast attractive tikki-taka styled football :D I had to start again from the basics and set up a very direct rigid style, nothing fancy although just enough to give me a fighting chance, started pre-season and had to do a lot of tweaking before I found something which looked promising.
Next job was the dealing with the players I had available, I honestly didn't know where to look amongst the poor attributes they possessed, my 10k in the bank wasn't going to be much help here although there were lots of free agents available and some fairly decent looking youngsters from higher leagues available for loan. I made the decision to turn that 10k transfer budget into extra wages and take in the maximum quota of season long loans. Bringing in 8 players and relasing 1 gave me a few more options.
One tactic turned into 3 which I planned to use throughout the season depending on who I was coming up against. The season started rather poorly, it was taking my players a long while to get used to what I was asking of them, I won the opening game then went through 5 games where it finished 1-1, made a few minor changes and then we seemed to get going.
I'll appologise at this stage for not taking screen shots of my first 2 seasons, I only had the idea to post this up on my current season, if anyone's interested I'll post a lot more information as I progress.
I've just finished my 3rd season and have included my final positions along with cup progress. Particular highlights were the shock quarter final appearance for a Sky Bet League 2 side in the QF of the Carabao Cup in only my 2nd season, tbh I was absolutly rinsed by City although was far from ready :D This current season's appearance at Wembley in the FA Cup SF also sent shockwaves through the football world. Once again I was soundly thrashed by Arsenal, they sent out a pacey team and we were bystanders, the gulf in quality was huge and has worried me slightly for next seasons start in the Championship.

No complaints over the team performance this season, we ran away with the championship finishing over 30 points ahead of number 2, we added the Checkatrade trophy to the cabinet... Bit of a cheap double although the fans were amazed even suggestion the mayor should give me freedom of the City of Maidstone :D I have to mention a player named Ellis Chapman... My long run in the Carabao cup resulted in some serious coin heading in the clubs direction so I decided to spend a chunk on a decent midfielder as the calibre in the free transfer market was shockingly bad. Young Mr Chapman was interested although took some persuading. He wanted assurances we'd be promoted and wanted a 500k release clause which I had no problem with as I didn't believe anyone would pay that kinda money for him! When we started The Sky Bet League 1 campaign he was banging them in from midfield left, right and centre! As we entered into December he started to get scouts watching him, as he already had 18 goals I started to get a little nervous! I tried to offer him a new contract although his head was turned, he wouldn't negotiate due to the interest shown in him. It started with a few low ball bids from Burnley and WBA which unsettled him, he came to me with a concern that he was upset the bids were rejected. I pointed out his release clause and told him that was the bottom line. He was suprisingly happy with this and said "Lets see what happens" He scored another 5 goals that month and then the dreaded transfer window opened.
Almost immediatly, Norwich (PL team) came in with a 500k offer meeting his release clause... BUGGER! I immediatly got searching for a replacement as I didn't want the season to fall off the rails as we were doing very well at that stage, the club indicated that I could have most of the 500k selling fee, I replaced him with a 400k Championship player who did an excellent job for the remainder of that season.
Chapman was dumped straight in the Norwich U23 team, he made a single first team sub appearance that season. Then the FA Cup 5th round was drawn, guess who we got :D Chapman was cup tied and Nowich made the trip down the A12 to Maidstone where we were waiting, the following game played out
Vs Norwich
I don't think Norwich knew what hit them! Sure, they had players that far exceeded the ability of mine although one of my philosophys since starting with Maidstone is to ensure that any team visiting the Gallagher Stadium would know they'd been in a game. Absolute shit house tactics, we are a horrible team to play against at home and this has contributed to my decent cup runs. I was hoping as it was televised that the camera would pan to Ellis Chapman at full time, in my mind that did happen :D Norwich went into shock after that game and ended up relegated... How do you like those fucking apples Ellis?
Final PL Table

Ellis Chapman

Notable Maidstone Players
----------------------------------------
Jonathan Bond
Super Jonny Bond
It took me 2 years to finally find a decent keeper, Jon was actually a free transfer from a Championship team, he was far from convinced with Maidstone and I had to agree to 3 promises, he wanted a coaching team overhaul, promise we'd be in the Championship within 2 years and for the club to sign more attacking players. I ageed to all demands and he was ours, I hoped I hadn't made a huge mistake although 37 clean sheets throughout the season was a phenominal return.

Jake Clarke-Salter AKA Captain Shithouse!
Captain Shithouse
Make no mistakes, Jake is a bit of an animal! Signed from Chelsea as a season loaner, he managed 5 red cards before Christmas, this was followed by a lengthy injury layoff, I'm convinced he'd of gotten another 5. When he did manage to stay suspension and injury free he was fantastic, his Chelsea contract is about to expire so he could be here next season! Watch this space!

Sjaak van den Helder
Super Sjaak
I had to give Sjaak a mention, I overhauled the staff as we were getting better and gave him the job as our chief scout. Around a week later he sent me a report of a German player he was familiar with named Philipp Ochs. I'd never heard of the guy and he certainly hadn't appeared on any of my searches. His stats were fantastic and he was free!! What's the catch here Sjaak? I imediatly offered him a contract and he was ours. As soon as he was in the squad he was valued at 3.5kk I was speechless! Sjaak is now my favourite ever Dutch person, he can do no wrong!
Ochs 1
Ochs 2
So, about to head into the Championship, I have a few reservations at this stage, mostly financial and related to the clubs facilities. We don't have a lot of money nor do we have any ways of generating much extra. In the Sky Bet First Division despite our dominance and cup runs, our attendance average was 20th in the division! I'll once again go for a full set of loan players and give things 100% and theres nothing to suggest we couldn't perform another miracle although we are simply not equipped for the PL, our stadium holds 6200 with 2500 seats, Premiership rules state a reequirement of a minimum 12500 seating capacity with undersoil heating! The reality is this is a non league stadium which can only have another 2000 seats. The board have flat refused to even upgrade to that level as they can't afford it! Have absolutly no idea what would happen if we found ourself promoted this season!
Well, that's all for now, hope that someone finds this interesting, if so I'll happily update with my maiden Championship season details.
Any questions happily answered.

2018 Season Review

At some point near the end of 2016 after the departure of head coach Bruce Arena the chief executives of the Los Angeles Galaxy, President Chris Klein and General Manager Pete Vagenas, embarked upon a series of season-long experiments usually undertaken by Football Manager gamers with a sense for the absurd. Following 2017’s experiment of putting Giovani dos Santos in front of Jermaine Jones and a youth reserve squad and the subsequent worst season in club history they went into 2018 with a new idea “What if we take the worst team in MLS and give them one of the best players in the world?”

Result: The greatest bad team of the year, a chaotic and frustrating goalercoaster that came within one win of making MLS Cup playoffs only to stick the landing with a season-ending 200 dB shart.

Meanwhile for years supporters raised unheeded warnings about the coming expansion team known as Los Angeles Football Club, a cross-town iceberg directly in the path of the SS Galaxy. Even billionaire oligarch Phillip Anschutz has realized almost too late that the ship needs an emergency evasive turn.
Enter the 2019 experiment of the LA Galaxy: “What if we take last year’s team and give them one of those tough South American coaches?”

Under New Management

Klein and Vagenas have self-exiled to the boardroom and taking the helm is new General Manager Dennis Te Kloese. An actual sports management director is back in charge of the competitive-playing side of the business. The Admiral is on the bridge; all hands prepare for soccer!
In what is the LA Galaxy’s most significant offseason roster change they have acquired the brain trust of Argentine powerhouse and back-to-back Superliga champions Club Atlético Boca Juniors, led by head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto, assistant coach Gustavo (his twin brother) and chief trainer / painsmith Javier Valdecantos; plus an assortment of sinister CONMEBOL henchmen.
The Galaxy’s new ‘Boca Norte’ regime deserves a closer look.

PERFORMANCE COACH: Javier Valdecantos
The most interesting torturer in the world. Nicknamed ‘The Butcher' and/or 'The Assassin' Valdecantos is known for his ruthless fitness regimen gleaned from over 26 years of experience in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico and Spain. The Assassin began his career as the personal trainer to Diego Maradona so there’s a good chance his character might show up in the next season of Netflix’s ‘NARCOS’.
A student of progressive sports science as well as old-fashioned cruelty, he implements cutting-edge tools and methods to hone player skills. Reportedly it is Valdecantos who has the final say in preseason friendly match roster selection. Despite his reputation he is a passionate player advocate and Galaxy team members are singing his praises in interviews. Ola Kamara, if you’re reading this blink twice if you want us to call the police.

ASSISTANT COACH: Gustavo Barros Schelotto
Buy one GBS and get the other for free. From what can be seen Gustavo appears to be the brother more involved with field training. After the February 9th 1-1 preseason friendly against Toronto FC he brought the team back out and ran them through post-match drills much to the satisfaction of Galaxy fans. You get at them, Gustavo; Saturday nights at the bar are for winners!

ASSISTANT COACH: Dominic Kinnear
Somehow the former San Jose Earthquakes and interim 2018 Galaxy coach—he of the infamous Decision Day choke job—has managed to remain a part of the coaching staff. A well-liked presence in the locker room, Kinnear’s focus will be on coordinating the Galaxy defense. Yeah moving on…

GENERAL MANAGER: Dennis Te Kloese
The former youth director for the Mexican National Team and before that an obscure Carson-based MLS franchise, DTK as G’s fans nicknamed him is charged with building professional rosters for all of the Los Angeles Galaxy teams. Gone is the era when the FO would cold-call European sports agents and ask which 2nd-Division washouts want to make almost a million dollars a year scoring own-golazos in sunny Los Angeles.
On his first day Dennis turned on a garden hose and shooed away all of the greasy hucksters loitering outside the corporate offices waiting for the next opportunity to steal the club’s precious TAM.

HEAD COACH: Guillermo Barros Schelotto
In line with Uncle Phil’s mandate to upgrade the LA Galaxy to MLS 3.0 certification the front office has hired the obligatory flashy championship-winning coach: 2008 MLS Cup champion (as a player) Guillermo Barros Schelotto. An intense and driven taskmaster on the rebound after a devastating Copa Libertadores loss, the former Boca Juniors coach is looking to bring his demanding standards to the city of sloth and traffic.
Team chemistry is key for the 2019 team as much as it was the kryptonite of the 2018 season. On the field the LA Galaxy speaks five languages—Spanish, English, French, Norwegian, and Bingham—but the lingua franca remains a pantomime of angry faces and pointing gestures at open spaces on the pitch. Teaching these players how to communicate plays will be GBS’s biggest challenge.

Offseason Roster Changes

The core of the 2018 team remains for the 2019 season but a few adjustments have been made.
Status Name Description
OUT Ashley Cole The Galaxy’s veteran left back and Team Captain has returned to England to retire on the beaches of Derby County whilst playing for a local ‘football’ club.
OUT Michael Ciani Former center back Ciani has gone to live on a nice farm upstate. No further questions.
OUT Baggio Husidic A long-term member of the G’s roster whose option expired, midfielder Husidic briefly joined a preseason camp with a local team before being released.
OUT Ariel Lassiter Galaxy reserve forward and Los Dos mainstay Lassiter was released in December and signed by Costa Rican club Alajuense.
OUT Sheanon Williams Emergency summer signing and warm body the Galaxy could stuff into its depleted backline, defender Sheanon Williams was released at the end of the 2018 season.
OUT Brian Sylvestre A 3rd choice goalkeeper who may or may not have appeared with Los Dos.
OUT ON LOAN Joao Pedro Oof. Once-promising midfielder turned Los Dos benchwarmer turned repeat loanee Joao Pedro is being moved around the world so that the G’s can use his international roster spot. His last known location was CD Tondela in Portugal.
OUT ON LOAN Bradford Jamieson IV Once considered a rising star in the Bruce Arena years, this injury-ravaged Attacking Midfielder is on his way to San Antonio FC in the USL.
IN Matt Lampson David Bingham being David Bingham, the Galaxy might need a backup goalkeeper. I don’t know why they didn’t just keep that one good one. Magee something or other.
IN Diego Polenta The first flexing of the international clout of GBS. See his entry elsewhere.
IN ON LOAN Uriel Antuna The first flexing of the international clout of DTK. See his entry elsewhere.
IN Juninho Everybody has that one well-worn article of clothing they slip into when they want to feel comfortable. Fan favorite depth midfielder Ju-Ju-Juninho is the G’s old sweatpants and it’s good to wear him again, nevermind the Chicago smell.

In addition there are a few young prospects on the bubble of getting a contract.
Predicted Squad Name Description
USL Team Emil Cuello 19th choice pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, 22-year old SMU midfielder Emil Cuello has impressed in preseason matches against Toronto FC and Atlanta United.
USL Team Don Tchilao 36th choice pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, 22-year old Oregon State forward Tchilao is destined for Los Dos. What, you think a college boy’s gonna take Zlatan’s job?
First Team Diedie Traore A young left back from France who impressed in last year’s open tryouts, the Galaxy II standout might be upgraded to the seniors for position depth.
First Team Julian Araujo This poor kid. He thinks this is his big break… and it is, the doomed fool; because Julian Araujo is a right back, a backup right back, and it is the most injury-cursed of all of the Galaxy’s positions. For him Hell will no longer hold any surprises.

Key Players

Zlatan Ibrahimović – Forward (Team Captain)
If you thought Galaxy fans would stop worshipping Zlatan, think again.
Last season’s temperamental savior and this year’s Team Captain has been placated with a renewed investment from Uncle Phil—personally with a new Designated Player contract of $7.5 million per year and clubwise with new coaches and a less-embarrassing squad of teammates. Zlatan didn’t come to America to fill his trophy cabinet with ‘Arizona Iced Tea Mucho Mango MLS Soccer Dude of the Week’ Awards. Whatever our league considers a championship he wants to own.
The Risk: Sophomore seasons from UEFA vets rarely fare well for the Galaxy. Both Steven Gerrard and Jelle Van Damme fell apart in their second year with the G’s, the former from age and the latter from homesickness / SoCal’s low-level atmospheric ennui. David Beckham in 2009 publicly begged A.C. Milan not to send him back to the filthy troglodytes in Los Angeles (we showed him, with a statue).
With Ibra the risk is he could get hit with any or all of the 2nd-year maladies.
The Reward: Once Europe flushed away Becks he put work into the Galaxy and earned his toys. Ibrahimović, already rejected abroad, is in the post-Milan Beckham phase of his career and dedicated to MLS. If his body holds up the Galaxy have an entire season’s worth of the services of a world-class icon.

Romain Alessandrini - Winger
The Platonic ideal of an LA Galaxy player, beloved-by-fans “Alessandreamy” combines hustle, grace, love for the crest, sharp passing and a hint of flair balanced with a certain hard-nosed strength.
2017’s silver lining spent 2018 in an emotional struggle with injuries and the bench, emerging at the end with his starting place returned but his Designated Player status jeopardized by Giovani dos Santos’s contract intrigues. If the Galaxy can hold onto Romain no one will benefit more from his presence than Zlatan Ibrahimović. Dreamy is literally God’s wingman.

Uriel Antuna - Winger
The benefit of hiring the youth director of the Mexican National Team as General Manager is that he comes already prepared to supply a Los Angeles soccer franchise with one of its most sought-after commodities. Meet Te Kloese’s first catch: 21-year old Manchester City prospect and El Tri hopeful Uriel Antuna, here in MLS on a season-long loan after doing a two-year stint with FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Simply put, from what we saw in the Toronto FC game DTK is stunting on his bosses by getting a rent-to-own 2020 TAM star and 2021 LigaMX payday.
Antuna is fast. With speeds approaching Ema Boateng levels alongside ball control skills at “way better than Boateng” he already represents an upgrade to the attack on the wings. Chasing down loose balls with the confidence of a man walking into Del Taco holding five dollars and making recovery tackles with the kamikaze bravery of that same man placing an order, Antuna’s chief weakness seems to be a lack of individual creativity once he gets in the opponent’s penalty box. Maybe time, coaching and chemistry with the forwards will unlock that final piece.
On the vast confetti-strewn plains of the Digs Antuna will be lethal. The human equivalent of a Macho Combo Burrito seasoned with ‘Del Scorcho’ sauce will punish on the transitions and provide fire to both ends.

Ola Kamara - Forward
The Art Garfunkel of LA’s ‘Simon & Garfunkel’ front two. It is patently unfair to dismiss Ola Kamara’s achievements, him being part of a strike duo with a combined over 500 goals and regular appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
Kamara’s talents as a goal poacher who sneaks into spaces deep inside the penalty box were largely unexploited during last year’s season (he did have his moments ). However this year with the inclusion of one Uriel Antuna on the left the Galaxy’s Norwegian Ninja might have found an assist-giving Garfunkel of his own. Count on Kamara improving upon his goal tally.

Giovani dos Santos - Attacking Midfielder
For the past two seasons midfield goldbricker Giovani dos Santos has been living out the plotline to the 1999 film ‘OFFICE SPACE’, about a corporate drone who stops caring about his workplace responsibilities and is subsequently promoted up the hierarchy.
To those who call these accusations unfounded here is my proof.
Year Apps Minutes Goals Asst $ per G+A
2015 11 894 3 5 $250,000
2016 37 3009 16 8 $177,083
2017 26 2280 6 4 $550,000
2018 14 825 3 2 $1,200,000
(Sad stat: While creating this table I just realized in 2018 my team paid Giovani dos Santos $7,272 per minute of playing time. In 2007 my team infamously paid an injured David Beckham $18,465 per minute during his self-admitted “nightmare” season.)
Meanwhile the Galaxy scored 61 league goals without him. His shift was being covered by Chris Pontius, Sebastian Lletget and his brother Jonathan dos Santos leaving him free to enjoy the Los Angeles lifestyle. With one year left on his contract he came into the offseason ready to sign an extension.
There’s just one problem: Zlatan Ibrahimović (22G, 10A, $699.95 per minute) wanted a raise and the divine avatar of testosterone needed a D.P. spot to go with it; and since the Galaxy made $63 million last year largely on the back of Ibra they were going to give him the D.P. spot. Giovani’s spot.
The rumor is Gio’s father tried to shop his son around LigaMX and got shot down. Journalists covering the Galaxy beat say the FO then offered to buy down Alessandrini’s D.P. contract with TAM to open the spot and Dreamy refused as a matter of pride (‘OFFICE SPACE’ callback: “No way! Why should I change? He’s the one who sucks.”). News reports state AEG has authorized the Galaxy to pay Dos Santos for the last year of his contract and cut him loose. And then came the whispers… of a ‘contract restructuring’.
Like an A-hole Jesus miraculously breaking one loaf of bread into a multitude of turds Giovani dos Santos has offered to restructure the last year of his $6 million D.P. contract into a 4-year, $1.5 million TAM extension. And the Galaxy seem ready to eat it.
Nobody but Gio—who’s made $17 million in MLS and plays soccer as a hobby--wants this deal. Franchise owners are outraged. It could blow up negotiations with the players’ union. Galaxy fans are cycling through the stages of grief and looking for omens in billboards and merchandise webpages. The league stands once more on the brink of chaos ready to condemn another LA-induced ‘rules innovation’. And the season begins in one week.
Hopefully this entire entry is completely irrelevant By March 1st. If not, Zlatan help us all.

Diego Polenta – Center Back
At long last the Galaxy may have found their defensive leader. Allow me to introduce you to the manimal responsible for making the G’s look like a professional team. Welcome to big boy country.
For once when the Galaxy say a player is an “international veteran” it isn’t a euphemism for older than dirt. 27-year old Uruguayan defender Diego ‘Patrón’ Polenta honed his skills for 6 years in Italy’s Serie B before going home to double-fist trophies with Nacional de Montevideo. The thinking man’s Hulk reportedly turned down lucrative offers from Leeds United and Club Atlas to embark upon a six-month Landon Donovacation into the countryside to clear his head, train and ponder what is the measure of a man.
For Galaxy Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto, in need of a first-rate center back, only man’s absolute unit of measurement would suffice. Patrón answered the call.
Unfortunately Valdecantos is still reforging Diego’s match fitness but what has been witnessed so far is hype fuel. Polenta is a calming presence in the backline giving teammates the freedom to push ahead. Less a meat cleaver and more a Ginsu knife he can gently slice the ball from his opponent with a single quiet step. We’ll have to wait to see him saw through the metaphorical lead pipe.
He also commands his personal space with the fortitude of an experienced CONMEtooBOL survivor. Note to other teams: This year you won’t score on the Galaxy via aggravated sexual assault.
The big man has a big brain and an uncanny vision to spot opposing plays rarely found in Galaxy defenders. Daniel Steres believes Diego has “the shining”.

Jorgen Skjelvik – Left Back
Every season there’s one Galaxy player who makes unhappy fans eat their words. The ‘Suck It, Haters!’ MVP of last year was Chris Pontius; this year the betting money is on defender Jorgen Skjelvik.
Forming an ill-matched CB partnership with Michael Ciani last year Skjelvik, who reportedly played left back for 3 years in Norway, always looked confused and unhappy. “Dette er ikke min posisjon,” Jorgen insisted, a statement repeated by center forward turned left winger Ola Kamara. Everyone assumed it was a traditional Norwegian greeting.
With Ashley Cole gone it seems the G’s have no choice but to make a left back play at left back. And guess what: Skjelvik might be okay at left back. Jorgen now looks more confident on the ball and is pressing up the field overlapping with Antuna. He should have a much happier 2019 and make all of his doubters look like fools. Folks, Rosetta Stone works.

Best Case Scenario

Last year’s squad, saddled with injuries and suspicious pre-World Cup ‘injuries’, was ranked 17th in MLS for shots but 3rd for goals scored; if you took out penalty goals the Galaxy were 2nd. In regular season games the G’s were held scoreless only three times, the same as Atlanta United and LAFC. LA’s success rate of shots on goal to goals scored: 38%. Unrivaled.
Zlatan’s “I am a lion” shtick is modesty; in the wild they only hunt at a 25% kill rate.
All of that firepower is coming back. Now imagine instead of 17th for shots taken the Galaxy are 10th or even 4th. That would be an 80 goal season.
MLS is a league where momentum wins and nothing builds momentum more than a new coach. The sky is the limit for the LA Galaxy: Shield, Cup, impotent tears of haters and the rebirth of a dynasty.

Worst Case Scenario

Look, I’m not going to defend the LA Galaxy’s 2018 season… and neither would the players. Major League Soccer’s ultimate ‘mullet team’ (business up front, party in the back) sent balls flying into nets in both directions. I’m not joking, they scored 66 goals and their GD was +2.
Half of that loser defense is also coming back. And the team has no depth.
Worse case, drama tears apart the franchise. Polenta goes hard on one of the crybaby teams and gets a media-induced suspension a la Nigel de Jong. Fallout from Giovani’s contract dispute distracts Jonathan dos Santos or Alessandrini has to be sold last-minute. The May gauntlet (8 games in 35 days including away at NY, Columbus, Orlando and KC) ruins player health. God suffers the unthinkable injury. July’s ‘Rivalry Month’ sees up to three opportunities for trouble with supporters of San Jose and LAFC creating a lingering negative atmosphere. The August schedule is a murderer’s row of 1-point results. LA crashes below the playoff line for a third straight season and Beckham’s statue demands to go to Madrid.

Likely Outcome

Schelotto’s first season sees the Galaxy 3rd or 4th in the west and almost winning conference semifinals, screwed by the single-leg format. The experiment shows promise and he gears up for the true title challenge in the 2020 season. Consider this year GBS’s warning to the league.

/r/Championship's Championship club by club season preview - part 1!

Part 2 here - Part 3 here - Part 4 here

On Friday at 8pm UK time, Reading and Derby County will kick off the 127th season of the English second division - also known as the Championship! 24 clubs will compete for 3 promotion spots to the Premier league (2 via automatic promotion and 1 via playoffs) and to avoid the 3 relegation spots to the third tier a.k.a League One.

Its looking like a really tight and competitive season. The league is absolutely full of ambitious player and managerial talent - the more time goes by the more it looks like a Premier League 2. If you want a competitive league with proper English football, that also has the spice of skilful players and forward thinking managers, it really is the place to go.

This is guide written by the fans who have come together on /Championship - an absolutely huge thanks to them. Do check out the sub, we try to keep it a good place to discuss the EFL, away from the rancid gloryhunting shithole that is /soccer (just kidding - I like this place). Lots going on, including a score predictor thread which is running all season.

This guide is in table order with the PL demoted sides first. Only 5 clubs today (because the Swansea one is a fucking novel and I can't fit any more in), the rest will be submitted tomorrow and Friday. Do bare in mind that not all the transfer news will be up to date as these guides were largely written a week ago. Point out to me if there are any clear errors with formatting or spelling.

The 17/18 table - Wolves, Cardiff and Fulham went up. Barnsley, Burton and Sunderland went down. This season West Brom, Swansea and Stoke join from the PL and Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham join from League 1.
These are the bookies' favourites for promotion (via Oddschecker):
Club Odds
Stoke 2.75
Middlesbrough 4
West Brom 4
Nottingham Forest 4.5
Leeds 4.75
Swansea 5
And relegation:
Club Odds
Rotherham 2.2
Bolton 2.25
Ipswich 4.5
Reading 5
QPR 6
Hull 6
How to watch in the UK: Live rights are owned by Sky Sports. They are upping the number of televised matches this season. Reading v Derby on Friday is televised. The weekly highlights show previously on Channel 5 is moving to Quest TV, which apparently is on Freeview.
How to watch abroad: Depends, but in most territories, the iFollow Service is available, which is £110 to watch all a single club's matches. Bargain. I think the clubs that aren't on iFollow have their own similar streaming services.
Check out club Youtube channels - quite a few of them post extended highlights now with their own commentary, including Derby, Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday, Brentford and more. (You may need VPN to watch if you're abroad.)

Swansea City by RafiakaMacakaDirk and my_knob_is_gr8

Location: Swansea, Wales
Nickname: Swans, The Jacks
Major honours: Football League Cup (2013), Championship Play-off Winner (2011), League One Winners (1925, 1949, 2008)
17/18 finishing postion: 18th (Premier League)
Transfermarkt squad value: €115.5 mil NOTE: This number is as of July 22nd, when we still have Mawson (€15 mil), A. Ayew (€15 mil), Bony (€10 mil), Clucas (€8 mil) and Fernandez (€8 mil), who are all pretty much expected to be sold, or loaned out, before the season starts. Without all of these players except Bony (who's injured for a while so it makes it unlikely he'll be sold soon), the squad value would be around €70 mil.
Manager: Graham Potter joined the Swans on 11th June 2018. In 2010, he became head coach of Östersund, who were in the fourth tier of Swedish football. 5 years later, he got the club promoted into the Swedish top flight and in 2017, they won Svenska Cupen which qualified them for the Europa League where they managed to get through the group stage. He’s been applauded for what he did at Östersund and the way he managed to build the club up from nothing. The year after his success in the Europa league he signed a 3 year contract with Swansea.
Potter is well respected by The Swans and after a few years of poor managerial and financial decisions his appointment is seen as a step in the right direction to bringing us back to our old ways of being a well-run club. Potter has been recognised for his "progressive" and "unconventional" coaching methods. At Östersund, he encouraged his players and staff to engage in community activities, such as performing in theatre and music productions which was designed to take them out of their comfort zone. Potter describes his style of football on the pitch as "tactically flexible, attacking, and possession-based". At Östersund, he deployed a flexible 3–5–2 formation centred on ball possession.
Best player(s)/ talisman:With many of our best players being rumoured with a move away what good players that remain at the start of the season is yet to be seen.
Alfie Mawson is probably our standout player. He’s been amazing for us since we got him and was a bargain at about £3m. He’s great in the air and is just an all round tank. Keeping him will be a huge boost for us and should be solid in the championship.
Federico "El Pajaro" Fernandez has also been strong at the back with Alfie. The pair played with each other for the majority of last season and together became a solid unit. We will most likely sell him to reduce wages though.
Jordan Ayew put in a great shift last season and was our top goal scorer. His work rate was immense and was able to drop back and defend when needed. He’s fast, able to beat a man and a decent finisher. Sadly all these players are transfer targets for other clubs and might not even be here at the start of the season. If we can keep a lot of our players we should have a decent season but who knows who'll be left by the end of the window…
Rising star: Swansea’s U23 had a great season last year and with Potter wanting a young and fresh squad, a handful have moved up into the first team.
Our standout youngster, Oliver McBurnie, joined Barnsley on loan in January last season where he went on to win a Championship player of the month award after 6 goals in 8 games and went on to win Barnsley’s Player of the year award. While only 22, he’s struggled to break into our first team but will most likely be our main striker for the coming season. Be on the lookout for his long legs, miniature shinpads and ridiculous sock length! LEGS LEGS LEGS!!!
Connor Roberts performed well at RB last season and adapted quickly to the premier league where he battled Kyle Naughton to be in the starting line up and did great when given the chance. Decent at going forward and professional at the back. Hopefully potter puts him ahead of Naughton.
What happened last season?: What Happened last season?: After our great escape the season before and with Paul Clement at the helm there was optimism that the 17/18 season could be our turning point where we start rebuilding 'The Swansea Way". How wrong we were.
After a disastrous transfer window where we sold Sigurdsson and never replaced him and started panic buying the week before the transfer window closed we were left an obvious hole in our team. We had no creativity in midfield and no one could kick the ball into the box to save their life. And just to rub it in further Renato Sanches turned out to be more disappointing than Bob Bradley. With the team sitting bottom of the table Clement was sacked in late December.
Then along came the wise talking Carlos Carvalhal who managed to rebuild the confidence the team had lost. Our results took a turn for the good, beating Liverpool, Arsenal, Burnley and West Ham consecutively at home. He pulled us out of the relegation zone and things were looking good. However, the good times were quickly followed by the bad times. Our form turned and we didn’t win a single one of our last 9 matches. We were quickly relegated after pitifully losing to both Southampton and Stoke in our last 2 games of the season.
Highlights (Or lowlights):
The pass by Renato Sanches that summed up his and our season
Swansea City 3-1 Arsenal
Summer transfer business (so far): At the end of last season, it was clear we needed several transfers, both in and out. However, this would all depend on the manager we got.
Yan Dhanda (Free, Liverpool): A 19 year-old Midfielder, Yan Dhanda left Liverpool this summer and joined the Swans in a free, before we even hired Graham Potter. At one time one of the most promosing youngsters in Liverpool's Academy, injuries slowed down his progress, and ultimately made him fall behind other players. Citing lack of first-team playing time, Dhanda decided to join us this summer in hopes of getting regular playing time in the senior squad. Through 3 pre-season games, Dhanda has been one of the brighest and most impressive players in the squad, even scoring a game-winning goal and smashing a penalty in a shootout against Genoa. With our current injuries and shenanigans involved in our midfield, Dhanda has a good chance of becoming a starter and hopefully guide our midfield during the season.
Jordi Govea (Free, Real Madrid): Another 19 year-old from Ecuador, Jordi was the first signing under Potter. Not much can be said about the lad, but this is what Real Madrid had as his bio:
Jordi is an Ecuadorian defender who possess three key qualities for a player in his position: he's skilful, is able to go past a player and has a good shot on him. He's left footed and is able to send in good crosses on the run.
With Martin Olsson currently as our starting LB, and Kyle Naughton as the backup, the hope is that Jordi can develop on our U-23 squad and hopefully move up to the senior squad in coming years. Also the only man I've seen do a medical while wearing jeans (https://twitter.com/SwansOfficial/status/1015251916132057089)
Joel Asoro (€2 mil., Sunderland): Yet another 19 year-old, a Swedish winger who has represented his country in the younger levels, he was Potter's first senior signing. With world-class speed, and some impressive skills, Asoro was able to score 3 goals and get 2 assists last season in 26 apperances for Sunderland. While these numbers may seem a bit disappointing, many of these games were sub appearances on a very dysfunctional team. Along with Dhanda, Asoro has been one of the most impressive players during preseason, constantly beating his man with either speed or skills, and whipping in good balls to Legs. At the current rate, Asoro appears to have a good chance of starting on the right wing spot, with Nathan Dyer and Luciano Narsingh backing him up.
Predicted starting XI: NOTE: This is gonna be assuming Mawson, A. Ayew, Clucas, and Fernandez are all sold by the start of the season. If by some reason they end up staying, they are pretty much guaranteed to start. Based on the pre-season games so far, a lineup looking like this would be plausible, with Rodon most likely to be replaced by a CB (possibly Scott McKenna) when we buy one. Our second unit is looking something like this.
Best case scenario: Graham Potter is able to motivate and make sure our senior players (Fer, Carroll, etc.) stay fit, along with our youngsters being able to make an impact as expected, and also we retain Mawson, Fernandez, and Clucas, we can finish in the top 2 and get promoted automatically.
Worst case scenario: Our worst case scenario, and something many of us fear of happening, consists of primarily 3 things. 1. Graham Potter isn't given enough time to build an identity with our squad and is sacked by the midway point of the season by the greedy, dumb American owners. . 2. We end up not replacing the players we sold properly like last summer, therefore having a squad with holes everywhere and no chemistry. 3. Our youngsters such as Asoro, McBurnie, Dhanda and company don't pan out and progress at all, thefore becoming mediocre players. This would all culminate in us looking like Sunderland, and making relegation a probability.
Prediction: Realistically I see us selling Mawson and company in the last days before the season starts and not replacing them properly until later on. Because of this, as well as our current injuries with Fer and Clucas, I can see us initially struggling to build an identity but over time, we will start playing like Potter wants us and finishing the season strongly.
8th place, missing the play-offs by 4 points
What will happen to your closest rivals?: The scum that is known as Cardiff City will break the record for lowest points ever accumulated in a Premier League season, getting 5 points all from draws, and will therefore get relegated with 17 games to spare.

West Bromwich Albion by Joelwba

Location: The Hawthorns, West Bromwich, West Midlands
Nickname: The Baggies, The Throstles
Major honours: 1x League title, 1x League Cup, 5x FA Cup
17/18 finishing postion: 20th in Premier League (relegated)
Transfermarkt squad value: £101.16m
Manager: Darren Moore or Big Dave as he's known to Albion fans. A club icon as a player in the early 2000s, he returned to look after our U23 squad before being promoted to assistant manager by Alan Pardew in January. Following the end of Pardew's horrific reign, Moore took temporary charge with Albion facing inevitable relegation. He led us to wins over Newcastle, Spurs, Man Utd and a draw with Liverpool, somehow taking our futile battle for survival to the final week of the season. Following this he earned the head coach role permanently. Moore is loved among the Albion faithful, largely due to his reputation as a player here. He heavily favours a 4-4-2 formation and at the back end of last season, tended to soak up pressure and play on the counter attack. It will be interesting to see how his approach differs in a league where we are one of the favourites, not fighting to survive (hopefully)
Best player(s)/ talisman: It's an interesting situation for Albion currently. There are plenty of Premier League quality players still in the squad. A lot depends on if they are picked off before the deadline shuts. Chris Brunt is a club stalwart and likely to be reappointed as captain. He is adored by the fans and in my opinion will be an incredible asset in the championship. His set pieces alone will bring 10+ goals to the side. Kieran Gibbs is a high quality player who appears to be set to stay and should make a big difference. Jay Rodriguez, Craig Dawson, Salomon Rondon and Nacer Chadli should all make a big difference in this division IF they stay. In all honesty I expect to lose a few of the above. Sam Johnstone appears to be an astute signing to replace the outgoing Ben Foster.
Rising star: Sam Field he's one of our own! He looked completely at home against some of the top Premier League sides last campaign. A box-to-box midfielder, he's full of energy and looks so comfortable on the ball. I expect him to be a major part of our side this season, having just signed a new long-term deal.
Kyle Edwards is an exciting attacking midfielder who has been impressing in pre-season. He may have a part to play following a loan spell at Exeter last campaign.
Jonathon Leko looked like a potential world-beater when he first came through a couple of years back. A lightning quick winger full of tricks. A loan spell at Bristol City and limited appearances later he seems to be losing his way. Will be an interesting one to watch.
Finally, the enigma that is Olly Burke. After signing with us last summer for £15m, he failed to impress any of the four managers we had over the season. He looks exciting when he comes on, without any end product so far, and was unfairly blamed for a loss at West Ham by Alan 'Coward' Pardew. We all know the talent he's got. Hopefully we can see it this season.
What happened last season?: Let's not talk about it... We finally escaped the stranglehold of Tony Pulis, only to opt for the human joke that is Alan Pardew and duly hurtled towards relegation. Four of our players stole a taxi and then played (and lost) the following weekend.
Pardew was sacked about 3 months too late, and Moore took over, restoring pride with some notable wins over Man Utd and Spurs.
This season we also lost the great Cyrille Regis, and the outpouring of emotion and the coming together of the club during the weeks after his passing was something special.
Summer transfer business (so far): We started by releasing Claudio Yacob, Boaz Myhill and Gareth McAuley. Yacob and McAuley will be greatly missed but it is perhaps the right time for them to go.
Jonny Evans departed for Leicester for a cut-price £3m, Ben Foster left for Watford and James McClean has departed for Stoke City.
Sam Johnstone has been bought in to replace Foster, with Jonathon Bond arriving as backup. Kyle Bartley has joined from Swansea City and it appears that Harvey Barnes will soon be arriving on loan from Leicester.
Finally, James Morrison is currently out of contract but still with the club. His future is uncertain.
I am very happy with Johnstone and Bartley. It has been a quiet window for Albion so far but that is largely a good thing. The squad is packed with Premier League talent and the window is more about keeping hold of them.
There is major interest in Dawson and Rondon, along with interest in Rodriguez, Hegazi and Chadli. If any of the above go, then we would need to replace. Otherwise I would be happy with another striker and another CB.
It is also worth mentioning that every player in the Albion side suffered a 50% wage cut upon relegation which means that we are financially sound despite relegation, but may lead to more big names leaving.
Predicted starting XI: This is my best attempt. It will undoubtedly be 4-4-2. We may see Nyom in at right back and perhaps Barry in for Field.
Obviously about half of this side could leave, so we shall see.
Best case scenario: The bulk of the side remains and the quality in the side shines through as we breeze to automatic promotion.
Worst case scenario: The better players leave or do not put the effort in. Moore cannot transfer his great start into his first full season in management. We become embroiled in a relegation battle
Prediction: It will be somewhere in the middle. I'd like to think we'll go up automatically but I think play-offs are more likely. 6th
What will happen to your closest rivals?: Villa won't go down but will settle into mid-table, despite the recent takeover.
I think Wolves will do well in the PL, although I don't know how long Nuno will last before a big club comes in.

Stoke City by mrmariomaster

Location: Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
Nickname: The Potters
Stadium: bet365 Stadium, 30,089 seats
Major honours: 1972 League Cup
17/18 finishing position: 19th, Premier League
Squad value: £127.8 million
Manager: Gary Rowett signed from Derby in May. His honest attitude has brought lots of optimism to fans, who are looking forward to an overhaul of the Club. His style of play seems to change based on the squad he has available.
Best Player: Joe Allen was vital to the Club last season, giving us hope that we would avoid relegation. His massive new contract signed this summer shows how loyal and committed to the Club he is, and will be a vital player this season.
Rising star: Tom Edwards is a local lad who has won the Under 18 Player of the Year award twice in the Club. In the latter parts of last season he played some good first team football.
What happened last season: A pathetic attempt at a season that had been coming for a while under Mark Hughes. Paul Lambert was appointed in January, but a win rate of just 2 in 15 matches wasn’t enough for him to keep his job and miss out on the million pound bonus offered to him.
Transfer business so far: So far this has been a decent transfer window. Peter Etebo had an amazing World Cup for Nigeria and Benik Afobe looks really promising. Adam Federici has also been appointed to replace Lee Grant. Xherdan Shaqiri has left along with a few players like Stephen Ireland and Glen Johnson who will not be missed. Badou Ndiaye also looks to be on his way out, but it looks like Jack Butland will stay with us, which is massive. Perhaps most surprising are the new contracts signed by our 2 best players last season, Joe Allen and Moritz Bauer.
Predicted Line up: Here is our predicted squad. I’m not sure what formation we will have. EDIT: This is a new version, complete with our rumoured new signings and in the right formation.
Best case scenario: Stoke will finish top with an all-time Championship points record.
Worst case scenario: A mediocre start to the season will see Rowett sacked and Stoke with a disappointing mid-table finish.
Prediction: I think with our squad and our new manager, we will finish 1st.
What will happen to our closest rivals? Port Vale will be relegated to the Vanarama National League.

Aston Villa by trueschoolalumni

Nickname: The Villans, The Villa, Prince William's Club, David "Twat" Cameron's Second Club.
Major honours: 7 First Division wins, 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups, 1 European Cup, 1 European Super Cup, 1 Intertoto Cup
17/18 finishing postion: 4th
Transfermarkt squad value: £67.77m and dropping fast
Manager: Steve Bruce (for now). Former Man Utd playing legend who's been a fixture of English football for decades. He joined Villa in 2016 after successful runs at Hull, Sunderland (yes they were good once) and Birmingham City. A bit of a promotion specialist, he's taken Championship clubs up to the Premier League 4 times in the past and just missed out last season, losing 1-0 to Fulham in the Playoff Final. Tactically, he's fairly old school who prefers 4-4-2 or a 4-1-4-1, usually involving a big man up top. Fun fact: while managing Huddersfield in 1999 he wrote three novels, "Striker!", "Sweeper!" and "Defender!", which focus on main character Steve Barnes, a football manager. Barnes solves crime and takes on terrorists, and the books have become prized rarities. The Guardian's Football Weekly podcast managed to get a copy and read out some of the copy - suitably awful.
Best player(s)/ talisman: There's only one Jack Grealish. A Villa boy through and through, he's been with the club since 2001 (aged 6), and made his way into the first team in the 2013-14 season. He's been the centre of controversy a few times, most notably getting on the beers and passing out on a Tenerife street. Playing as a number 10, his quick feet and dribbling skills provide a number of goals and assists, as well as fouls. He probably went down a bit too easily when first in the Premier League, but time in the gym has noticeably toughened him up and he's a much more solid player as a result. One of the better players in the Championship, and due to Villa's abject finances, a transfer target for the likes of Leicester.
Rising star: Keinan Davis could possibly be it, potentially Andre Green and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy as well.
What happened last season?: Have you ever walked into a casino, spotted the roulette table and popped £10,000 on red? It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off. You've doubled your money if you win, but look like a right git if you lose. Villa figured this was a good way to approach 2017-18: spend millions on players, get in lots of loans, gamble everything on achieving promotion. After a so-so start, Bruce got the team playing well, stringing together a number of wins and moving through the playoff spots. Unfortunately they ran into a few teams playing out of their skin - champions Wolves ran away with the league and boasted a squad that included several Champions League players. Neil Warnock's Cardiff couldn't stop winning and grabbed the second automatic promotion. In the playoff final Villa came up against a Ryan Sessegnon-led Fulham and were just pipped at the post 1-0.
Summer transfer business (so far): It's one-way traffic, due to absolutely abysmal finances. Loan spells for Lewis Grabban, Robert Snodgrass, Josh Onomah and Sam Johnstone have all ended, which is almost the spine of the team (Johnstone in particular - he was arguably the best keeper in the Championship and personally bagged a number of wins). Plus clubs are circling to pick off whatever assets we have left (eg. Jack Grealish, James Chester). With no prospect of anyone new coming in, it looks like the youth academy will be getting a lot more game time.
Predicted starting XI: Possibly this, but half these players could be gone before the first match.
Best case scenario: Mid-table anonymity would have to be best case - Villa are a mess and could go down this time around.
Worst case scenario: Our finances are the real issue - they are dire. Villa need to find £9 million this month to avoid going into administration. Owner "Dr." Tony Xia is a billionaire, apparently, but tax bills went unpaid and the question remains if he's able to support the club as generously as he has in the past. Administration, points deductions and potentially relegation to League One are all real possibilities right now. It's not looking good.
Prediction: Due to financial irregularities in the 23 clubs above us, Villa will get into the Champions League and take out the likes of Atletico, Bayern and Real Madrid on the way to our second European Cup. "Taylor, Green, prepared to venture down the left. There's a good ball played in for Jack Grealish. Oh, it must be and it is! It's Keinan Davis!"
What will happen to your closest rivals?: Unfortunately the Scum managed to avoid League One in the final rounds of the season. Here's hoping they go one better. Agbonlahor to re-sign for one game: the Derby. And score the winner, again.

Middlesbrough by OneSmallHuman

Location: The Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough

Major honours: The League cup 2003-2004 season
17/18 finishing position: 5th
Transfermarkt squad value: 79.34m
Manager: Tony Pulis became manager of us in late December 2017, replacing the sacked Garry Monk after a pretty lacklustre few months of the campaign (despite where our league position was). Pulis is known in England for being the man that is never relegated when in charge of someone in the top flight. We are all aware of Tony Pulis' style of football. You start by having a strong and massive defence and maximise your use of set pieces to gain an advantage. Pulis is a lover of all set piece plays, whether that is crossing the ball in from a corner or free kick, or launching a ball into the box from a throw in, they're all in his arsenal of weapons. 'Pulisball' as it is pretty much known. Pulis has achieved promotion from the championship once before with Stoke, and I hope he achieves it again with us this season
Best player(s)/ rising star: I mean, where else do I begin. Adama Traore. Arguably the best player in the championship on his day and is one of the most frightening dribblers in English football, maybe even world football. The winger is known for his speed and dribbling ability although is usually criticised for his lack of end product. Before last season I would've agreed, however 5 goals and 10 assists, with all but 2 assists coming before Pulis' arrival show the progression of the Spanish winger.
As for other members of the squad, Ben Gibson, the prodigal son. Boro through and through he's progressed into a commanding centre half with the ability to play out from the back thanks to Karanka. He gained attention and emerged as one of the few given credit after our disappointing premier league campaign but was only the subject of one bid upon our relegation, from now manager Tony Pulis. It remains to be seen whether he'll be here come the first game of the season, but I hope he will be.
As for future stars, Dael Fry, already has played 2 championship campaigns for us and looks as assured as a veteran of the game. Another centre half produced by our academy and he is being played in cdm this pre-season by Pulis, to add to his versatility. Hopefully a standout season for him, especially if Gibson does end up leaving. Finally, yes, he does always look as confused as images of him show.
What happened last season?: Well, the first half of the season was tragic under Monk. We played really poor football at times and looked like we hadn't defended a day in our lives. There was also no consistency in the team, we'd win one game then lose the next. A key theme under both managers however, was our inability to beat those around us in the table. After Pulis' appointment the results picked up and it ended with us finishing 5th in the table. We ultimately lost in the playoff semi finals to Aston Villa but honestly, we didn't think we'd even be in the top half around Christmas.
Summer transfer business (so far): Just the three deals to talk about so far. We've acquired Paddy McNair from Sunderland who looks like a decent player. He's been utilised in right back and midfield during pre-season so it looks like they'll be his positions for the season. I imagine he'll play alongside Clayts and Howson in a midfield three.
Aden Flint was signed from Bristol City and I think I'm in the minority when I say I don't like how much we paid for him. Obviously the man is a Pulis player but I'm a bit unsure about his defensive ability. That being said he's looked strong during pre-season and I'm sure Pulis will get the best out of him. Fabio departed our club for Nantes so we'll need more full back cover.
As for the rest of the window, I expect Gibson to leave but will be delighted if he doesn't. One of our strikers will also leave and Braithwaite should follow after his decent World Cup performances. We'll probably bring in a striker and a winger and hopefully hold onto Adama. That'd be a successful window in my eyes.
Predicted starting XI: My best guess The only other guess I could make is that Gibson might leave and then Ayala would start, but he's injured at this point in time. Britt might play over Gestede too if Pulis is feeling fancy.
Best case scenario: It has to be top of the pile right? It's not out of the question to imagine us up there and if everything clicks then we've got a chance. A defence that scores more than some teams' strikers, Adama channelling his inner Messi and finding consistency, Rudy/Britt/Bamford scoring for fun. It could be carnage.
Worst case scenario: I can't see us finishing outside the playoffs, if we did then that would be gut-wrenching. But if we did then that would most certainly be the worst. Realistically, it'd be losing in the playoffs... again, and if it were in the final again then god help me. Although saying this, now losing Bamford and maybe Traore will be a worst case scenario in itself, definitely if they're not replaced.
Prediction: Have to be confident, although it always kills me. 1st or 2nd. Tony Pulis and his nice white trainers carry us to the promise land. That being said, we never do it the easy way.
Best Match of Last Season Sorry Leeds fans, but it had to be. "Hattrick Bamford" as our Twitter account tweeted, 3-0 against Leeds with Adama running the show. Leeds clearly found some positive from the game as they're set to sign him off us. This was the sign of what we should've done more last season. Showed what Paddy could've been too if given an even more extended period in Striker by himself. Oh well.
What will happen to your closest rivals?: Who even are our closest rivals in this league? We're in geographical purgatory. Can't say Sunderland anymore so what? Leeds? Bielsa either turns them into the well oiled machine they hope for or he succumbs to the old Leeds ways and is sacked by December. As for the Mackems, probably promoted from League 1.
